Teens Cooking Up Dangerous Weed Oil To Get 'Honey' High

PHILADELPHIA -

Parents, listen up: A drug popular back in the 70s is making a very big comeback, and your teens are taking notice.

In fact, they're going online and finding plenty of ways to make it right in your own kitchen.

However, as you're about to see in the special video report from FOX 29's Thomas Drayton, cooking up this high can be a recipe for disaster.

Weed oil, known on the streets as "honey," comes from the dangerous process of turning marijuana plants into oil.

It's dangerous because the key ingredient is butane, the same butane used in a common lighter.

But at higher quantities, its vapors can build up and ignite by something as simple as static electricity.

Even more alarming is that a growing number of teenagers are taking this dangerous risk by making weed oil right in their own kitchens, watching and posting videos on YouTube.

Addiction specialist Ken Dickinson says making weed oil is only part of the danger. Ingesting it is another because the solvents that they use to extract it have residual effects. A drop or two can be just as potent as smoking an entire joint.

The side effects can include visual disturbances or perceptual alterations, which mean things are going to appear closer or further away than they are, and moving objects can appear to have trails.

Parents, do your homework. Obviously, we're not going tell you how it's made, but it's important to know what your teen may be up to.

It's in an oil. Some are hiding it in recipes, like brownies, ice cream or even salad dressing. But remember, this stuff is extremely potent. There have been cases where people have passed out and died after hitting their head.
